Why Spielberg is all ears for this Israeli podcast

The makers of hit podcast ‘Israel Story’ reveal the secrets of their success.

By Itay Stern for Haaretz

A 20,000-kilometer (12,400 miles) journey across the United States with a hyperactive dog – that’s how Mishy Harman describes the origins of his podcast “Israel Story”, which launched its third season at the In-House Festival in Jerusalem on Sunday.

When Evangelical radio stations in the Bible Belt almost made him fall sleep at the wheel, Harman took refuge from the anti-Obama, anti-abortion preachers after remembering a friend had given him episodes of a popular American podcast, “This American Life,” before he hit the road. Harman soon became addicted to the show’s incredibly human stories.

Danish Jewish radio silenced ‘for security reasons’

For the first time since going on air, Radio Shalom Copenhagen suspends broadcasting; host refuses police protection

By Amanda Borschel-Dan for The Times of Israel

Danish Security and Intelligence Services advised the Jewish community to cancel its Radio Shalom broadcasts Monday.

On the recommendation of the Politiets Efterretningstjeneste (PET), for the first time since going on air, host Abraham Kopenhagen did not broadcast his mix of Jewish music and culture Monday evening, reported the Copenhagen Post.

Denmark is on high alert following the dual terrorist attacks Saturday in which a free speech protestor at a Copenhagen cafe and 37-year old volunteer security guard Dan Uzan were killed. Uzan was slain while protecting some 80 attendees of a bat mitzvah at Copenhagen’s Great Synagogue.

The terrorist, who was shot by Danish police, was identified as 22-year-old Muslim extremist Omar El-Hussein.

Kopenhagen told Danish-language DR Nyheder, “PET says it’s too dangerous. We do not feel that it is too dangerous, but we respect the information we are given.”

Joe Franklin dead at 88: Radio and TV icon was the spirit of a hard-working New Yorker

The Bronx-born host started in television at its dawn in 1950. 'The Joe Franklin Show' welcomed a string of little-known actors, singers and comedians — from Barbra Streisand to Woody Allen — who went on to become megastars. Franklin died Saturday, reportedly of prostate cancer.

BY David Hinckley, NY Daily News

Like the demolition of Ebbets Field or Penn Station, Joe Franklin’s death Saturday took a little piece of New York with it.

Franklin, who was 88 and reportedly died of prostate cancer, wasn’t just a link to New York’s entertainment history. He was the spirit of the New York streets, the hard-working hustler who made it to the big time because it never occurred to him that he wouldn’t or couldn’t.

His late-night television show, from 1950 to 1962 on WJZ and then until 1993 on WOR, formed the core of the Joe Franklin legend.

It’s still in the “Guinness World Records” as the longest continuously running talk show in TV history.
